• Austin: A City With Soul SXSW Panel

Many thanks to my co-panelists (listed below) and everyone who attended our panel on the final day of SXSW Interactive 2014 at the Austin Chamber offices right in the heart of the festival downtown.

Serendipity, coincidence, diversity, entrepreneurial, paradox, acceptance, organic, hippy, neighborly. All were used by the panel and audience in an attempt to pinpoint the essence of Austin’s magic. The role of government, business, academia and ordinary citizens also garnered a large amount of discussion.

news release from the City included this quote:

“Why do Austinites love Austin? Our sense of community, passion for innovation, love of music and musicians, concern for protecting our natural environment and pride in Texas tradition and history — that’s for starters,” said panelist Thompson, former chair of the Austin Chamber of Commerce. “Where else is being weird cool?”

At the end of the hour there was an undeniable sense that this conversation is too critical to Austin’s future not to involve as many of its citizens as possible.

Two City of Austin staff and Council Member Chris Riley were in attendance. They announced a new meetup that aims to help put the City’s plan 30-year plan, ImagineAustin, into action. Carol plans on being at the first meeting to help further conversations started at the panel.

Community Impact’s write up includes additional coverage and quotes from the session.
