How Did Austin Do It?
34 years ago, the Austin Chamber of Commerce orchestrated its first marketing mission to Silicon Valley. More than 20 volunteers participated in the trip, whose purpose was to encourage Silicon Valley area businesses to think about Austin if they were expanding to other cities. At the time, no one knew where Austin was located. Volunteers had to carry maps of Texas to meetings to show Austin’s geographic location. Two years later, Carol Thompson became the first female chair of the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce. 90+ companies visited Austin to explore expansion opportunities. That year, 35 expanded in Austin. Those roots of economic development – collaboration and a can-do spirit – that still drive Austin’s economic growth today.
