QUICK
TIPS /
EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES
How can our clients find the time to market their
companies and services effectively and thoroughly? Here are a few
simple self-marketing tips that don't require a huge commitment
of time and can generate dramatic results. Please feel free to call
The Thompson Group if you would like more information on any of
these techniques.
The
Austin American Statesman accepts submissions from local professionals
for their weekly "Q&A" and "Five Tips" columns
of the business section. These brief capsule columns are your chance
to write about your expertise, gain great publicity for you and
your company, and access potential clients or customers. Think of
it as a free ad that positions you as a credible expert in your
field. Just follow the submission guidelines and submit your column.
How many holiday
cards did you receive from colleagues,
suppliers and clients during the month of December? Now you know
why it is difficult to utilize the holidays as a marketing opportunity!
Instead, think creatively about a different time of the year to
send greeting cards (Thanksgiving, New Year's, Valentine's Day)
or a unique alternative to traditional cards. For example, The Thompson
Group received a terrific response to the "Santa Stress Balls"
we sent in 1997. Some companies make a charitable contribution in
the name of their clients in lieu of sending them a basket of chocolates
or a poinsettia. Be sure to use your clients as suppliers when possible.
The
Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce offers many opportunities to
participate as speakers or panel members--but they have to know
who you are and what you do, of course. We suggest that you send
a brief bio (include information about you and your company) and
a few sample topics to Joanna Munson who coordinates programs for
the Chamber's area councils. Speaking engagements are one of the
most effective ways to establish yourself as an expert and to reach
a large number of people at once, on a personal basis.

While
one-on-one time with clients, prospects and key influencers is important,
entertaining clients can be much more creative than taking them
to lunch. Consider venues that are more unique and allow you to
entertain multiple people--like a corporate box at an Austin Ice
Bats hockey game. The evening is sure to be memorable and it gives
you and your staff the opportunity to network with many people at
once, a far better use of two or three hours.
The
next time you're invited to an event that you cannot attend, don't
just accept it as a lost opportunity. Consider sending a staff member
in your place (as long as it's appropriate) to represent your company.
The key to making this strategy work is to coach your employee before
the event as to what to expect and what to be looking for, and to
have them report results back to you following the event. This is
also a great "training" opportunity for your employees,
allowing them to develop networking skills.
Something
as simple as a pen can effectively and efficiently get your message
out, not by writing it, but by diplaying it. The Thompson Group
sent out pens which "clicked" through four of our favorite
tips for networking. Do you know these tips: meet 5 people at every
event, wear name tags on the right, use a firm handshake and have
fun. This is a creative way to get your name and your message in
front of your clients.
